"River & Moon" - A Bronze, glass kinetic, sculpture was inspired by the landscape of Twickenham, Central Oregon.
The John Day river, rim rock formations and the rising moon are elements that are incorporated into this piece. The bronze sculpture was commissioned by a Seattle couple with a ranch overlooking the valley and the John Day river, the sculpture is the centerpiece for the entryway. The natural look of bronze combined with the water quality of the glass really ties into the natural beauty of the area. AvalonBay Communities transformed the old Phil Smart Mercedes Benz dealership on 600 E Pike St. into a seven-story multi-family/retail project. As part of the project AvalonBay preserved portions of the old dealership and commissioned local artist Troy Pillow to design a breeze-way pass through with an homage to Mercedes Benz.
Troy created a grid system backed by perforated sheet in which iconic Mercedes Benz parts were attached. Partially fabricated sculpture using two new materials. Corten steel and Cedar logs. Corten or weathering steel will develop into a rich patina, providing a protective layer of rust. The cedar logs were each individually hand peeled and doweled into place. The tensile strength is a little higher than regular steel and takes a bit more "convincing" as seen in the photo below.
Fabrication almost complete on a new, kinetic, stainless piece. Ready for paint! Untitled at this time...
Junction Plaza Park was dedicated in 2010. Its development resulted from a tremendous community effort that transformed an old gas station site into a park and plaza. The original park design called for the installation of an art piece, but at the time of construction, funds did not allow. Now funding ($50,000) has been allocated for the creation of a significant piece of public art to be installed at the north/central border of the park. Through an international “call for artists” and formal selection process, West Seattle artist Troy Pillow was selected as the sculptor. Read more about the process at West Seattle Junction Association website. On Thursday Feb 11, a public meeting was held at Cupcake Royale. Troy was present as were reps from West Seattle Junction Association and Junction Neighborhood Organization. Attendees were encouraged to comment on three designs by looking at printed-out renderings of the design options, and animated versions on ipads. West Seattle Blog covered the event. Here are the three designs that are being reviewed.
